What is the Acyclovir dosage?

You should take Acyclovir as directed by your doctor.  Complete the entire course as symptoms may improve before you have finished all your medication but the infection may not be completely treated.  Only take the amount of Acyclovir that has been prescribed by your doctor and do not take it for longer than the recommended course.  Dosage varies from person to person and for the type of infection being treated.  The usual dosage for the treatment of genital herpes for adults and children over age 12 is 200mg five times per day for approximately 10 days.  Dosage for children under 12 is as per doctors instructions.  Dosage for treating chicken pox for adults and children weighing over 40kgs is 800mg 4 times each day for 5 days.  For children weighing less than 40kgs, the dosage is determined by the doctor.

What are the Acyclovir interactions?

Acyclovir can interact with Probenecid so you should inform your doctor if you are taking this medication.  You might not be able to take Acyclovir if this is the case or your doctor may have to adjust the dosage accordingly.  You should inform your doctor of any vitamins, herbal products or any other over the counter medication that you are taking.

What should I avoid while taking Acyclovir?

Due to the contagiousness of the herpes virus, you should avoid allowing infected areas to come into contact with other people.  Make sure you wash your hands after touching an infected area.  Avoid sexual contact with others if you are suffering from genital herpes.
