What to know before taking Augmentin?

Augmentin should not be taken if you are allergic to any penicillin drugs.  You should inform your doctor before taking Augmentin if you have liver disease or if you have had jaundice or hepatitis in the past.  You should also inform your doctor if you have mononucleosis, kidney disease or if you are allergic to any other medication.  If you are breastfeeding you should tell your doctor as it could pass into breast milk and cause harm to the child.  Augmentin has also been known to lessen the effectiveness of birth control pills so it is advisable to take extra precautions while taking Augmentin.

What is the Augmentin dosage?

Augmentin should be taken as prescribed by your doctor.  You should not take this medication for longer than prescribed or in larger quantities than recommended by your doctor.  Dosage is different for each individual.  For treatment of bacterial infections using Augmentin, the normal dose is 250-500mg every 8 hours for adults and children who weigh more than 40kg.  Doses for children weighing less than 40kg should be determined by the doctor.  Augmentin tablets should be swallowed whole.  Augmentin suspension should be shaken well before pouring the dose.

What are the Augmentin interactions?

Certain other drugs such as Probebecid, Allopurinol and other antibiotics used for treating bacterial infections, can interact with Augmentin.  You should tell your doctor about any other medication you are taking including all over the counter products such as vitamins or herbal remedies.

What should I avoid while taking Augmentin?

Augmentin can cause diarrhea but severe diarrhea can be a serious side effect so avoid taking anti diarrhea medication while taking Augmentin.  Contact your doctor if you experience watery or bloody diarrhea.
