You may develop an allergic reaction to Fluoxetine and signs of this could include hives; skin rash; trouble breathing or swollen throat, mouth, tongue, lips or face.  You should get medical help immediately if you notice any of these signs after taking Fluoxetine.

What to know before taking Fluoxetine?

Do not take Fluoxetine if you have been using an MAO (monoamine oxidase) inhibitor as you could experience serious or life threatening side effects. Dosage will vary depending on the condition being treated and the strength of the medicines prescribed.  Extended release capsules should not be broken, chewed or opened as they are intended to be slow releasing.  You should swallow these capsules whole with water.  Do not stop taking Fluoxetine suddenly as doing so could cause withdrawal symptoms.  Your doctor will reduce your dose gradually.

What are the Fluoxetine interactions?

Fluoxetine has been known to interact with certain medications including Clozapine, Digitoxin, Flecainide, Haloperidol, Alprazolam, Warfarin, Tryptophan, Phenytoin and Vinblastine.  Some pain medications such as Ibuprofen, Aspirin or Nabumetone can react with Fluoxetine and cause you to bleed or bruise easily. It is important to tell your doctor about any other medications you are taking even, pain killers, vitamins or supplements or herbal medications as these could also interact with Fluoxetine.

What should I avoid while taking Fluoxetine?

It is advisable to avoid alcohol when taking Fluoxetine in order to reduce the risk of some side effects.  Medications which cause drowsiness should be avoided while taking Fluoxetine as they can increase sleepiness caused.
