What is Estradiol used for?

Estradiol is an estrogen drug and is prescribed for treating symptoms of the menopause including dryness of the vagina, and hot flashes.  It can also be prescribed to treat patients with an estrogen deficiency due to hypogonadism which is also known as ovarian failure.  Estradiol injections are also sometimes used in the treatment of prostate cancer.

What is the Estradiol dosage?

The normal dosage for oral tablets in adults for the treatment of breast cancer is 10mg three times every day for at least three months.  Injections of Estradiol are given into a muscle usually every four weeks. The dosage of Estradiol injections can vary from 1mg to 30mg depending on the condition being treated and the gap between injections.

What are the Estradiol interactions?

Certain drugs may interact with Estradiol including Carbamezepine; Clarithromycin; Ketoconazole; St. John’s Wort; Rifamate; Warfarin; Itraconazole and Ritonavir.  Some other drugs may also interact with Estradiol so it is important to advise your doctor of any other products you might be taking including herbal medication, over the counter pain killers and vitamins or supplements.
