Do not take Neurontin if you are allergic to Gabapentin.  You may experience suicidal thoughts while taking Neurontin so you will have to be monitored by your doctor.  If you have conditions such as heart, kidney or liver disease then you should tell your doctor as you may need an altered dose. Neurontin should not be taken by women who are breastfeeding as it can harm a nursing baby.

What is the Neurontin dosage?

Only take Neurontin on the instructions of your doctor.  Do not take bigger doses than what you have been prescribed and do not take it for longer than the course prescribed. The dosage prescribed will be specific to each person depending on the strength of the medication and the condition being treated.  Dosage for epilepsy in adults and teenagers over the age of 12 is normally 300mg to begin with, three times each day.  This can be increased if needed up to a maximum of 1800mg per day. Doses for children from age three to 12 are dependent on body weight. This is usually 10-15mg per kilo of body weight, to begin with, each day split into three different doses.  This can be increased if needed.  You should not stop taking Neurontin suddenly as this can result in withdrawal symptoms.  This medication needs to be reduced gradually by your doctor.

What are the Neurontin interactions?

Certain drugs may interact with Neurontin including Naproxen, Morphine and Hydrocodone.  Some other drugs may also interact with Neurontin so it is important to advise your doctor of any other products you might be taking including herbal medication, over the counter pain killers and vitamins or supplements.

What should I avoid while taking Neurontin?

Your doctor will advise you of any food or drinks to avoid while taking Neurontin.  You should take extra care when partaking in any activities which require alertness as Neurontin can cause impaired reactions or impaired vision.  Avoid taking antacids two hours either side of taking your Neurontin medication as the antacids can lessen the body’s ability to absorb Neurontin.
