What is Clomid used for?

Clomid is prescribed for the treatment of infertility in women.  It works by helping the body to release hormones which make ovulation occur.  Clomid is used in women whose bodies will produce a follicle in the ovaries but do not experience ovulation.

Side effects of Clomid can include abdominal pain, hot flashes, enlarged ovaries, pelvic pain and multiple pregnancies.  More serious side effects can include diarrhea, headaches, blurred vision, abnormal menstrual bleeding, nausea, vomiting or abdominal swelling.  You should contact your doctor if you experience any of these serious side effects.  If you experience any of the signs of an allergic reaction, you should get emergency help immediately.  These signs can include swelling of the face, mouth or tongue; trouble breathing; rash or hives. Some patients taking Clomid have experienced OHSS (ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome).  Symptoms of OHSS include abdominal pain and swollen abdomen; breathlessness; nausea; vomiting; swollen hands or legs and weight gain.  You should contact your doctor immediately if any of these symptoms occur as OHSS can be fatal if left untreated.

What to know before taking Clomid?

You may experience blurred vision after taking Clomid so you should inform your doctor immediately if you have any visual changes.  There could be an increase of multiple births as a result of taking Clomid.  There is a higher risk to the mother and the fetuses with multiple pregnancies. If you have conditions such as uterine fibroids, liver disease, ovarian cysts, thyroid problems or any other chronic medical conditions, you should inform your doctor as it might not be recommended that you take Clomid or you may need a dose adjustment.

What is the Clomid dosage?

You should take Clomid as directed by your doctor.  Only take the amount of Clomid that has been prescribed by your doctor and do not take it for longer than the recommended course.  Dosage depends on the individual and the condition being treated.  The usual dosage of Clomid is 50mg per day for five days of your menstrual cycle.  It is usually given on the fifth day of the cycle.  If the treatment does not work straight away, the dosage may be increased gradually up to a maximum of 250mg per day for the five days.  Treatments may be repeated up to four times.  Clomid tablets should be swallowed with water.  Clomid causes birth defects if taken while pregnant.  Be sure not to take Clomid if you think you might be pregnant.

What are the Clomid interactions?

Clomid is not known to interact with any other medication but you should always tell your doctor about any other medication you are taking including vitamins or herbal products.

What should I avoid while taking Clomid?

As Clomid may cause vision problems, it is advisable to take care when driving or operating heavy machinery.
