Fosamax No Prescription

What is Fosamax used for?

Fosamax is prescribed for treating symptoms of bone loss caused by conditions such as steroid induced or postmenopausal osteoporosis and Paget’s disease.  Fosamax is a bisphosphonate and changes the way bones form and breakdown in the body.  It can help to slow bone loss, and stop bone fractures by increasing bone mass. Fosamax is prescribed in conjunction with calcium supplements,  a healthy diet and exercise.

What are Fosamax side effects?

More common side effects of Fosamax include swollen feet and hands; headaches; back pain; constipation; minor heartburn; swollen or painful joints; diarrhea; headaches; weakness; or upset stomach.  Some side effects which are more serious can include numbness or swelling of the jaw; heartburn that gets worse; chest pain; difficulty swallowing; severe muscle pain; or pain or burning in the back or ribs.  Contact your doctor if you have any incidence off these more serious side effects.  If you notice any signs of an allergic reaction such as rash or hives; trouble breathing or swollen tongue, throat, mouth or face you should seek medical advice straight away.

What to know before taking Fosamax?

If you have problems staying upright for more than 30 minutes you should not take Fosamax as it can cause problems in the esophagus or stomach and requires that you stay upright for 30 minutes after taking each tablet.  Fosamax should be taken each morning before eating or drinking.  You should wait 30 minutes after taking your tablet before eating or drinking anything. There have been incidences of osteonecrosis (bone loss) of the jaw in some patients taking Fosamax.  Symptoms of this include pain in the jaw; loose teeth; infections in the gum; swelling or numbness of the jaw or gum surgery or injury that is slow to heal.  Factors that can increase incidences of osteonecrosis of the jaw include cancer patients who have had radiotherapy, chemotherapy or patients who have taken steroids.  You may need to have special tests to see if you can safely take Fosamax if you have conditions such as stomach ulcers, hypocalcemia, kidney disease or a deficiency in vitamin D.  Do not take Fosamax if you are pregnant as it may harm an unborn child.

What is the Fosamax dosage?

Only take Fosamax on the instructions of your doctor.  Do not take bigger doses than what you have been prescribed and do not take it for longer than the course prescribed. The dosage prescribed will be specific to each person depending on the strength of the medication and the condition being treated. Dosage for adults can range from 5-40mg per day for daily doses or from 35-70mg per week for weekly doses, depending on the condition being treated and the individual patient in question.  Tablets should be taken 30 minutes before eating or drinking and should be taken with a full glass of plain water.  Do not lie down for thirty minutes after taking the medication.

What are the Fosamax interactions?

Certain drugs may interact with Fosamax including Aspirin, Indomethacin, Naproxen, Ibuprofen and Diclofenac.  Some other drugs may also interact with Fosamax so it is important to advise your doctor of any other products you might be taking including herbal medication, over the counter pain killers and vitamins or supplements.

What should I avoid while taking Fosamax?

Your doctor will advise you of any food or drinks to avoid while taking Fosamax.  Avoid taking any other medication including your calcium supplements, vitamins or antacids for 30 minutes once you have taken your Fosamax tablets.
