What is Prozac used for?

Prozac is prescribed for treating symptoms of conditions such as panic disorder, bulimia nervosa, major depression, OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) and PMDD (premenstrual dysphoric disorder).  Prozac is an SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor and works by balancing chemicals in the brain which can cause these disorders.

What are Prozac side effects?

More common side effects of Prozac include drowsiness, insomnia, sore throat, stuffy nose, dizziness, sneezing, nervousness, constipation, nausea, changes in weight, decrease in libido, dry mouth or increased appetite.  Some side effects which are more serious can include confusion, stiff muscles, fainting, difficulty concentrating, loss of appetite, high temperature, hallucinations, seizures, lack of coordination, palpitations, vomiting or problems with memory.  Contact your doctor if you have any incidence off these more serious side effects.  If you notice any signs of an allergic reaction such as rash or hives; trouble breathing or swollen tongue, throat, mouth or face you should seek medical advice straight away.

What to know before taking Prozac?

Prozac can cause suicidal thoughts when it is first taken especially in those under the age of 24.  This medication should not be taken with medications such as Thioridazine, Pimozide or with an MAOI (mono amine oxidase inhibitor) as you could experience severe side effects which could be fatal.  You should make sure that if you have been using an MAOI, that you wait at least 14 days before taking any Prozac to ensure that all the MAOI has left your system.  If you have conditions such as liver disease, diabetes, bipolar disorder, kidney disease, or a history of drug abuse, you should tell your doctor who will arrange to test you to ensure you are getting a safe dose of Prozac.  Pregnant women should not take Prozac as it could cause serious lung problems in newborns.  Prozac has also been reported to pass through breast milk and cause harm to a nursing baby so should not be taken by pregnant women.  Unless advised by a doctor, Prozac should not be taken by anyone under the age of 18.

What is the Prozac dosage?

Only take Prozac on the instructions of your doctor.  Do not take bigger doses than what you have been prescribed and do not take it for longer than the course prescribed. The dosage prescribed will be specific to each person depending on the strength of the medication and the condition being treated. The usual dosage of Prozac for treating adults with OCD is 20mg once per day in the morning.  This can be increased by your doctor if required but usually not more than 80mg per day is prescribed.  The full effects of Prozac may not be felt for up to four weeks so you should continue to take it for the full course prescribed.

What are the Prozac interactions?

Certain drugs may interact with Prozac including Vinblastine, Escitalopram, Haloperidol, Flecainide, Phenytoin, Naratriptan, Sertraline, Zolmitriptan and Tryptophan.  Some other drugs may also interact with Prozac so it is important to advise your doctor of any other products you might be taking including herbal medication, over the counter pain killers and vitamins or supplements.

What should I avoid while taking Prozac?

Your doctor will advise you of any food or drinks to avoid while taking Prozac.  Alcohol should be avoided as it can increase any side effects which could be caused by Prozac.  You should take extra care when partaking in any activities which require full alertness, as Prozac can cause impaired reactions or thoughts. Medications which cause sleepiness such as narcotic pain medicines, sleeping pills, muscle relaxers, sedatives or cold medications, should all be avoided as they can add to the drowsiness which Prozac causes.
