What is Azithromycin used for?

Side effects of Azithromycin can include insomnia; tinnitus; nausea; constipation; vaginal discharge or itching; headaches; skin rash; fatigue; vomiting; stomach pain or decrease in sense of smell or taste.  More serious side effects can include severe headache; skin blistering or red rash; palpitations; jaundice; nausea; loss of appetite; abdominal pain; watery or bloody diarrhea or fever.  Contact your doctor if you experience any of these serious side effects. Seek emergency medical assistance if you experience signs of an allergic reaction including trouble breathing; tightness of chest; rash or hives or swollen face, lips, tongue or throat.  A very rare reaction to Azithromycin can cause severe symptoms such as swollen face and neck that could restrict speaking, breathing or swallowing.  Another severe reaction is anaphylaxis which can be fatal as the body can go into shock.  Get emergency help immediately if any of these symptoms appear.

What to know before taking Azithromycin?

Azithromycin should not be taken if you have had an allergic reaction to this medication before or if you have ever had an allergic reaction to Erythromycin.  This medication could cause a severe form of diarrhea which could be fatal if left untreated.  If you develop any watery or bloody diarrhea stop taking the medication and contact a doctor. You should tell your doctor if you have liver problems as you may need to be monitored while taking Azithromycin.

What is the Azithromycin dosage?

Take Azithromycin as instructed by your doctor.  Do not take a larger dose than prescribed and do not take this medication for a longer period than instructed by your doctor.  Azithromycin capsules should not be taken with food and it should really be taken an hour before or two hours after eating.  Dosage varies from person to person and depends on the infection being treated.  The usual dosage for Azithromycin is 500mg once on the first day.  For the next four days the dose is usually 250mg once per day.  Make sure to complete the course even if symptoms have improved as the infection may not be completely treated.  Missed doses should be taken when you remember but never take more than one dose at a time.

What are the Azithromycin interactions?

Azithromycin may interact with certain drugs such as Hexobarbital; Warfarin; Cyclosporine; Nelfinavir; Digoxin or drugs which contain Ergot.  It may also interact with other drugs and over the counter medicines so it is important to inform your doctor of any medication you are taking including vitamins and herbal products.

What should I avoid while taking Azithromycin?

Avoid taking Azithromycin with any antacids which contain magnesium or aluminum.
