What to know before taking Flomax?

If you have ever suffered an allergic reaction to a sulfa drug, make sure to tell your doctor as you could be allergic to Flomax too. You should not take Flomax if you are taking other alpha adrenergic blockers like Prazosin, Terzosin, Alfusozin or if you are allergic to Tamsulosin. If you are required to have cataract surgery you need to tell the surgeon in advance that you are taking Flomax as it could have an effect on your pupils during surgery.  Your surgeon will advise you on whether to stop taking your medication.  If you experience a painful erection lasting more than four hours or if you feel as though you’re going to pass out, you should stop taking your medication and contact your doctor immediately.

What is the Flomax dosage?

Only take Flomax on the instructions of your doctor.  Do not take bigger doses than what you have been prescribed and do not take it for longer than the course prescribed. The dosage prescribed will be specific to each person depending on the strength of the medication and the condition being treated. Normal dosage for Flomax is 0.4mg once per day to begin with, taken approximately 30 minutes after eating.  You should always take it after the same meal every day.  This dose may need to be increased but your doctor will advise.  Do not break, crush or chew your medication but swallow it whole with water.

What are the Flomax interactions?

Certain drugs may interact with Flomax including Citalopram; Fluoxetine; Ciprfloxacin; Warfarin; Cyclosporine; Indinavir; Itraconazole; Nelfinavir; Ketoconazole and Ritonavir.  Some other drugs may also interact with Flomax so it is important to advise your doctor of any other products you might be taking including herbal medication, over the counter pain killers and vitamins or supplements.

What should I avoid while taking Flomax?

Your doctor will advise you of any food or drinks to avoid while taking Flomax.  Flomax can cause dizziness so you should be careful not to get up too quickly from a sitting down or lying position.  You may experience impaired reactions or thoughts when taking Flomax so ensure that you take extra care when engaging in anything that requires full attention such as operating heavy machinery or driving.
