What is Fioricet used for?
Fioricet is prescribed for treating tension headaches which are caused by contracting muscles. Fioricet is made up of three main ingredients – caffeine, butalbital and acetaminophen. What are Fioricet side effects?
Side effects of Fioricet can include confusion; vomiting; anxiety; dizziness; abdominal pain; headaches; vomiting; or loss of appetite. More serious side effects can include palpitations; bleeding or bruising easily; dark urine; shortness of breath; jaundice; body aches, fever or chills; weakness or clay colored stools. You should contact your doctor if you experience any of these serious side effects. If you experience any of the signs of an allergic reaction, you should get emergency help immediately. These signs can include swelling of the face, mouth or tongue; trouble breathing; rash or hives.
What to know before taking Fioricet?
If you have been using a monoamine oxidase inhibitor, you should not take Fioricet until 14 days have passed or you could suffer serious side effects. You must make sure all the MAO inhibitor has left your body before taking Fioricet. Make sure never to take more Fioricet than prescribed for you as the acetaminophen in it can cause liver damage if you take too much. You should make sure that any other medication you are taking does not contain any acetaminophen to prevent overdose. Butalbital is a highly addictive drug and should only be taken by the person it has been prescribed for. Due to the risk of liver damage you should inform your doctor if you consume more than three alcoholic drinks per day. Do not take Fioricet if you are allergic to caffeine, butalbital or acetaminophen.
What is the Fioricet dosage?
You should take Fioricet as directed by your doctor. Only take the amount of Fioricet that has been prescribed by your doctor and do not take it for longer than the recommended course. Dosage will vary from person to person and depending on how strong the medicine is. The usual dosage prescribed for adults for Fioricet is one or two pills every four hours if required. Tablets are usually 325mg, 500mg or 650mg in strength. You should not take more than six tablets of 325 or 500mg in a 24 hour period and not more than four tablets of 500mg strength. Fioricet can be taken with or without food but if you experience an upset stomach you should take it with milk or food.
What are the Fioricet interactions?
Fioricet may interact with certain drugs such as Zidovudine; Phenytoin; Sulfinpyrazone; Warfarin; Probenecid; Imipramine; Clomipramine; Fluticasone and Selegiline. There may also be other drugs which could interact with Fioricet so it is advisable to inform your doctor of any other medication you might be taking including vitamins, over the counter pain killers and herbal products.
What should I avoid while taking Fioricet?
Taking Fioricet with alcohol could increase liver damage so it is advisable to avoid alcohol. You may experience impaired reactions or thoughts while taking Fioricet so you should be careful when doing anything that would require you to be alert such as driving or operating heavy machinery. You should let your doctor know if you are taking any other medication which causes drowsiness such as sleeping tablets, tranquilizers, muscle relaxers or narcotic pain medication as these can all increase the sleepiness which Fioricet causes. Unless advised by a doctor you should avoid stimulants such as caffeine or diet pills.
