What is Motrin used for?
Motrin and is prescribed for treating symptoms of inflammation and pain caused by such conditions as toothaches, headaches, arthritis, back pain, menstrual pain and minor injuries. Motrin is an NSAID (non steroidal anti inflammatory drug) which works by blocking hormones in the body which cause this pain and inflammation.

More common side effects of Motrin include diarrhea, headaches, itchy skin, bloating, minor heartburn, blurred vision, tinnitus or dizziness. Some side effects which are more serious can include decrease in urination; jaundice; slurred speech; chest pain; stiff neck; muscle weakness; black stools; vision problems; chills; fever; dark urine; breathlessness; nausea or coughing up blood. Contact your doctor if you have any incidence off these more serious side effects. If you notice any signs of an allergic reaction such as rash or hives; trouble breathing or swollen tongue, throat, mouth or face you should seek medical advice straight away.
What to know before taking Motrin?
Motrin like all NSAID’s can cause an increased risk of life threatening conditions such as heart attacks or strokes. The risk increases with long term use. There is also a higher risk of serious problems with the intestines and stomach such as perforations or bleeding. These gastrointestinal problems can be critical so it is important to get medical help immediately if you experience symptoms such as bloody or black stools; vomiting which looks like coffee or coughing up blood. You might need tests to determine a safe dosage of Motrin if you have any condition such as heart disease; asthma; nose polyps; blood clotting or bleeding disorder; history of stomach ulcers; hypertension; history of strokes, heart attacks or blood clots; or if you smoke. It is not recommended for pregnant women to take Motrin in the last three months of pregnancy as it could cause birth defects.
What is the Motrin dosage?
Only take Motrin on the instructions of your doctor. Do not take bigger doses than what you have been prescribed and do not take it for longer than the course prescribed. The dosage prescribed will be specific to each person depending on the strength of the medication and the condition being treated. The usual dose for teenagers over 12 and adults is 200mg four to six times a day as required. You should not exceed six tablets in a 24 hour period.
What are the Motrin interactions?
Certain drugs may interact with Motrin including Sertraline, Meloxicam, Fosinopril, Lithium, Ramipril, Warfarin, Methotrexate, Enalapril or Trandolapril. Some other drugs may also interact with Motrin so it is important to advise your doctor of any other products you might be taking including herbal medication, over the counter pain killers and vitamins or supplements.
What should I avoid while taking Motrin?
Your doctor will advise you of any food or drinks to avoid while taking Motrin. Motrin should not be taken with Aspirin as the it can lessen the effectiveness of Aspirin. Alcohol should be avoided as it can increase the risk of bleeding in the stomach. As Motrin can cause an increase in sensitivity to the sun, you should avoid excessive exposure to sunlight or artificial sun rays.
