What is Elavil used for?
Elavil is a tricylclic antidepressant which is prescribed for the treatment of the symptoms of depression. It works by balancing chemicals in the brain which can cause depression.
What are Elavil side effects?
Side effects of Elavil can include drowsiness; swollen breasts; lack of concentration; dry mouth; blurred vision; tinnitus; diarrhea; decreased libido; nightmares; headaches; impotence; dizziness; nausea and vomiting. More serious side effects can include convulsions; sudden numbness; vision problems; uncontrollable jerking; palpitations; chest pain; light headedness; confusion; bleeding or bruising easily; hallucinations; sudden thirst with a headache or decrease in urination. You should contact your doctor if you experience any of these serious side effects. If you experience any of the signs of an allergic reaction, you should get emergency help immediately. These signs can include swelling of the face, mouth or tongue; trouble breathing; rash or hives.
What to know before taking Elavil?
If you have used an MAOI (monoamine oxidase inhibitor) or have taken Cisapride in the last 14 days, you should not take Elavil. MAOIs include Phenelzine, Tranylcypromine, Rasagiline, Isocarboxazid or Selegiline. Elavil can induce suicidal thoughts when it is first taken especially in those under the age of 24. You should inform your doctor if you have conditions including bipolar disorder; glaucoma; urination problems; schizophrenia; diabetes; history of strokes, seizures or heart attack or hyperthyroidism, you should inform your doctor. You should also inform your doctor if you are allergic to any medication. You should not take Elavil if you are pregnant or breastfeeding as it can harm an unborn or nursing baby. If you are due to have surgery you should inform your surgeon that you are taking Elavil as you may need to cease taking it before surgery.
What is the Elavil dosage?
You should take Elavil as directed by your doctor. Only take the amount of Elavil that has been prescribed by your doctor and do not take it for longer than the recommended course. Dosage will vary from person to person. For treating depression the usual adult dosage in tablet form is 25mg two to four times each day to begin with. This can be increased by your doctor if required up to a maximum of 150mg per day. Patients in hospital may be given doses higher than 150mg per day. Dosage for teenagers is 10mg three times every day with 20mg at night to begin with. This dose can be increased by a doctor if required up to a maximum of 100mg per day. Dosage for children from age six to 12 is usually 10-30mg per day. Dosage for children under the age of six must be prescribed by a doctor. Do not stop taking your medication unless on the advice of your doctor as stopping suddenly could cause withdrawal symptoms.
What are the Elavil interactions?
Elavil may interact with certain drugs such as Disulfiram; Quinidine; Propafenone; Guanethidine; Flecainide and Cimetidine. There may also be other drugs which could interact with Elavil so it is advisable to inform your doctor of any other medication you might be taking including vitamins, over the counter pain killers and herbal products.
What should I avoid while taking Elavil?
Taking Elavil with alcohol could increase side effects so it is advisable to avoid alcohol. Grapefruit products can interact with Elavil so should be avoided. Elavil can cause impaired reactions so extra care should be taken when driving or operating heavy machinery. You should also avoid exposure to the sun or artificial sunlight as Elavil can cause increased sensitivity to sunlight and could cause you to burn more easily.
