These signs can include swelling of the face, mouth or tongue; trouble breathing; rash or hives.
What to know before taking Metronidazole?
You should tell your doctor if you have ever suffered an allergic reaction to any medication or if you have any conditions such as Crohn’s disease, liver disease, epilepsy, leucopenia, nerve disorder or seizure disorder, as you might need to have your dose adjusted. Breast feeding women should not take Metronidazole as it can pass through breast milk and harm a feeding baby.
What is the Metronidazole dosage?
You should take Metronidazole as directed by your doctor. Only take the amount of Metronidazole that has been prescribed by your doctor and do not take it for longer than the recommended course. Dosage will vary from person to person. Dosage depends on the strength of the medication, the length of the course and the condition which is being treated. For treating bacterial infections in adults and teenagers, the dosage is based on body weight. It is usually 7.5mg per kg of body weight four times per day for. The maximum amount is 1gram per kg of body weight and it should be taken for at least seven days. You should continue taking your medication for the entire course as symptoms may improve before the infection has been treated completely. Do not break, crush or chew the extended release form of Metronidazole as it is intended to be released into the body slowly and this could cause an excess of medication to be absorbed too quickly by the body. Tablets should be taken one hour before eating or two hours after.
What are the Metronidazole interactions?
Metronidazole may interact with certain drugs such as Warfarin, Disulfram, Lithium, Phenobarbital or Phenytoin. There may also be other drugs which could interact with Metronidazole so it is advisable to inform your doctor of any other medication you might be taking including vitamins, over the counter pain killers and herbal products.
What should I avoid while taking Metronidazole?
Taking Metronidazole with alcohol could increase side effects so it is advisable to avoid alcohol while taking your medication and for at least three days after ceasing Metronidazole. Antibiotics can cause diarrhea, but this could also be a sign of a new more serious infection so it is inadvisable to take any anti diarrhea medication while taking an antibiotic. You need to contact your doctor immediately if you experience any bloody or watery diarrhea.
