What is Quinine used for?
Quinine is prescribed for the treatment of malaria which is caused by mosquito bites.
What are Quinine side effects?
Side effects of Quinine can include dizziness, confusion, sweating, hunger, irritability, tremors, headaches, drowsiness or tingling. More serious side effects can include muscle weakness, decrease in urination, fever, dark urine, nausea, abdominal pain, hearing problems, skin rash with fever or headache, vomiting, or diarrhea. You should contact your doctor if you experience any of these serious side effects. If you experience any of the signs of an allergic reaction, you should get emergency help immediately. These signs can include swelling of the face, mouth or tongue; trouble breathing; rash or hives.
What to know before taking Quinine?
Quinine should only be used as per instructions from your doctor. If you ever had an allergic reaction to Quinine or a similar medication, you should not use Quinine. It should also not be used in people with conditions such as optic neuritis, G-6PD (glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase) deficiency or myasthenia gravis. If you have conditions such as kidney disease, heart rhythm disorder, heart disease, liver disease or low levels of potassium in the blood, you will need to be tested by your doctor to ensure you are getting a safe dose of Quinine.
What is the Quinine dosage?
You should take Quinine as directed by your doctor. Only take the amount of Quinine that has been prescribed by your doctor and do not take it for longer than the recommended course. Dosage will vary from person to person. The dosage for treating malaria in adults is 600-650mg three times per day for at least three days. Quinine should be taken with food to reduce the chance of getting an upset stomach.
What are the Quinine interactions?
Quinine may interact with certain drugs such as Warfarin, Solatol, Methadone, Rifampin, Droperidol, Theophylline, Pimozide, Digoxin, Carbamazepine, Mefloquine, Metoprolol, Astemizole, Aminophylline, Erythromycin and Haloperidol. There may also be other drugs which could interact with Quinine so it is advisable to inform your doctor of any other medication you might be taking including vitamins, over the counter pain killers and herbal products.
What should I avoid while taking Quinine?
Quinine causes impaired reactions so extra care should be taken when doing any activities which require full alertness such as driving or operating heavy machinery. Antacids should not be taken at the same time as Quinine as they can reduce the effectiveness of the body to absorb Quinine.
