Sertraline No Prescription
What is Sertraline used for?
Sertraline is prescribed for treating symptoms of major depression such as fatigue; difficulty concentrating; disrupted sleep; loss of interest in day to day activities; suicidal thoughts or changes in appetite. Sertraline may also be prescribed to treat PMDD (premenstrual dysphoric disorder), OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder), post traumatic stress disorder, panic disorder and social anxiety disorder. Sertraline works by slowing the rate at which the body absorbs serotonin, thus increasing serotonin in the body, which in turn results in improved moods.
What are Sertraline side effects?
More common side effects of Sertraline include insomnia, nervousness, anxiety, indigestion, abdominal pain, constipation, nausea, loss of appetite, sore throat, dizziness, diarrhea, problems with vision, vomiting, headaches, increased perspiration, agitation, dry mouth and loss of libido. Sertraline can cause weight loss which can be a problem in those who have already lost weight due to their form of depression. It can also cause episodes of mania in some people. Contact your doctor if you have any incidence off these more serious side effects. If you notice any signs of an allergic reaction such as rash or hives; trouble breathing or swollen tongue, throat, mouth or face you should seek medical advice straight away.
What to know before taking Sertraline?
If you have been using a mono amine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), you should not take Sertraline until you have stopped using the MAOI for at least 14 days. Failure to do this could result in life threatening side effects from occurring. Sertraline like all SSRI antidepressants could bleed in the stomach if combined with other medication such as NSAIDS. Sertraline could cause problems in newborn babies if taken by pregnant women so should not be taken unless advised by your doctor.
What is the Sertraline dosage?
Only take Sertraline on the instructions of your doctor. Do not take bigger doses than what you have been prescribed and do not take it for longer than the course prescribed. The dosage prescribed will be specific to each person depending on the strength of the medication and the condition being treated. Adults suffering from OCD or mental depression are usually prescribed 50mg of Sertraline, once per day to begin with. This is usually taken in the morning or night time. If necessary, your doctor will increase the dosage but not normally more than 200mg per day is prescribed. For treatment of post traumatic stress disorder, social anxiety disorder, or panic disorder, the starting dose is normally 25mg per day in the morning or night and again this can be increased as far as 200mg per day. Do not stop taking your medication suddenly as it could cause withdrawal symptoms. Sertraline should be reduced gradually as per your doctor’s instructions.
What are the Sertraline interactions?
Certain drugs may interact with Sertraline including Digitoxin, Lithium, Diazepam, Cimetidine, Sumatriptan, Propafenone, Warfarin, Tolbutamide and Flecanide. Some other drugs may also interact with Sertraline so it is important to advise your doctor of any other products you might be taking including herbal medication, over the counter pain killers and vitamins or supplements.
What should I avoid while taking Sertraline?
Your doctor will advise you of any food or drinks to avoid while taking Sertraline. It is advisable to avoid alcohol with Sertraline as it can increase the risk of side effects.
