What is Valtrex used for?

Valtrex is prescribed for treating symptoms of herpes virus infections such as cold sores, chickenpox, genital herpes and shingles.  It is an antiviral drug and works by slowing down the rate of growth of the herpes virus.  It also stops the spread of the virus in order to allow the body to fight the infection.

What are Valtrex side effects?

More common side effects of Valtrex include joint pain, abdominal pain, dizziness, minor skin rash, headaches, depression, sore throat, dizziness and menstrual pain.  Some side effects which are more serious can include speech problems, drowsiness, confusion, vision problems, mood swings, agitation, hallucinations, pain in the lower back, difficulty concentrating, loss of appetite, weakness, vomiting, bleeding or bruising easily, fever, jaundice, decrease in urination or bloody diarrhea.  Contact your doctor if you have any incidence off these more serious side effects.  If you notice any signs of an allergic reaction such as rash or hives; trouble breathing or swollen tongue, throat, mouth or face you should seek medical advice straight away.

What to know before taking Valtrex?

To reduce the risk of causing harm to the kidneys, you should tell your doctor about any medication you are taking to prevent Valtrex interacting with other medications which are known to harm the kidneys.  For maximum benefit from Valtrex, you should start treating your symptoms as soon as they appear.  Valtrex cannot cure the herpes virus, so it is important to know that you could still pass the infection to someone else while taking Valtrex.  There could be a risk of a serious side effect which harms red blood cells while taking Valtrex.  Signs of this include weakness, fainting, fever, bloody diarrhea, red spots on skin, bruising or bleeding easily, decrease in urination or jaundice.  If you have ever had an allergic reaction to Acyclovir or Valacyclovir, you should not take Valtrex.  If you are allergic to any other medications of if you have conditions such as kidney disease, HIV/AIDS, or if you have had a bone marrow of kidney transplant, you should tell your doctor before taking Valtrex as you may need to be tested to ensure you are getting a safe dose.  Valtrex should not be taken by women who are breast feeding as it can pass to the nursing infant through the breast milk and cause harm.

What is the Valtrex dosage?

Only take Valtrex on the instructions of your doctor.  Do not take bigger doses than what you have been prescribed and do not take it for longer than the course prescribed. The dosage prescribed will be specific to each person depending on the strength of the medication and the condition being treated.   The usual dosage of Valtrex for treating herpes virus infections in adults is 500-1000mg twice per day for ten days.  Dosage for children should be determined by a doctor. Valtrex can be taken with food or without.  You should make sure to drink extra fluids while taking Valtrex to keep the kidneys working effectively.

What are the Valtrex interactions?

Certain drugs may interact with Valtrex including Gentamicin, Methotrexate, Kanamycin, Plicamycin, Diclofenac, Cisplatin, Streptozocin, Tacrolimus, Ifosfamide, Mesalamine, Indomethacin and Acetaminophen.  Some other drugs may also interact with Valtrex so it is important to advise your doctor of any other products you might be taking including herbal medication, over the counter pain killers and vitamins or supplements.

What should I avoid while taking Valtrex?

Your doctor will advise you of any food or drinks to avoid while taking Valtrex.  Make sure that any infected areas are kept away from other people. People with genital herpes infection should avoid sexual contact with others or make sure to use a condom to prevent the infection from spreading.
