Zanaflex is used for short term relief of muscle spasticity. You should not take Zanaflex with medications such as Fluvoxamine or Ciprofloxacin. Do not partake in any activities that require muscle tone while taking Zanaflex. Tests may need to be carried out on any patients who have conditions such as kidney disease, blood pressure problems, liver disease, or are allergic to any other medications, in order to ensure they get a safe dose of Zanaflex. Pregnant women should not take Zanaflex as it could harm an unborn baby. It should also not be taken by women who are breastfeeding as it could pass through the breast milk and could harm the nursing infant. If you stop taking your medication suddenly, you could experience withdrawal symptoms. Zanaflex should be reduced gradually.
What is the Zanaflex dosage?
Your dose of Zanaflex will be prescribed for you by your doctor according to your specific needs. Do not take larger doses than what has been prescribed for you. Do not take the medication for longer than the course which your doctor has prescribed. Normal dosage for adults is 8mg every four to six hours. You should not take more than 36mg of Zanaflex in 24 hours as an excess of Zanaflex could damage your liver.
What are the Zanaflex interactions?
Zanaflex has been known to interact with certain medications including Methyldopa, Verapamil, Gatifloxacin, Cimetidine, Moxifloxacin, Guanfacine, Amiodarone, Mexiletine, Levofloxacin, Zileuton and Norfloxacin. It is important to tell your doctor about any other medications you are taking even, pain killers, vitamins or supplements or herbal medications as these could also interact with Zanaflex.
What should I avoid while taking Zanaflex?
It is advisable to avoid alcohol when taking Zanaflex in order to reduce the risk of some side effects. Any medications which cause drowsiness should be avoided as they can add to the sleepiness which Zanaflex causes. These medications include narcotic pain killers, sleeping pills, seizure medication and cold medications.
